Pope Francis Advocates for Peace at Screening of 'Freedom on Fire' in Vatican

In December 2023, Pope Francis made a heartfelt visit to the new Synod Hall in the Vatican for the special screening of “Freedom on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom” by the talented Evgeny Afineevsky, an award-winning movie director who has been nominated for an Oscar and an Emmy. The event was attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See, including the Ambassador of Ukraine, as well as Italian and international guests and journalists. After the film ended, the Pope observed a minute of silence in prayer for the victims of the war in Ukraine.

Following a brief intervention by Evgeny Afineevsky, Pope Francis addressed those present and expressed his gratitude for their witness to such pain. “Wars are always a defeat,” he said, encouraging everyone to stand with those who suffer. He also invited everyone to pray for peace.  After the movie session, noteworthy gifts were exchanged, including an unusual silver cross with a rough ruby, designed by contemporary jewelry designer German Kabirski, symbolizing the Pope's tireless efforts to bring peace to the world.
