This pendant is named after Tanit - the great protective goddess of Carthage, worshipped across the ancient Mediterranean as a mother, guardian, and cosmic force whose symbol was worn and carved throughout North Africa and the Levant for centuries. The stone at its center is an authentic ancient maskette carved from warm sandy limestone, part of a group of small masks associated with Mediterranean folk, devotional, and apotropaic traditions of the medieval to early modern periods. Seen in profile, the face reveals its true depth - a rounded brow, a strong nose, features carved with quiet conviction into the natural form of the stone. Such maskettes were carried and worn as personal protective objects across Southern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, each one a small act of faith in the power of the human face. Sourced from a private collection, acquired on the art market in the late 20th century. Set in 925 sterling silver plated with white rhodium, with a natural trillion-cut amethyst - violet and geometric, placed beside the ancient face as its counterpart rather than its crown.
