Brak Sterling Silver Pendant with Ancient Chalcolithic Eye Idol & Natural Rough Ruby

This pendant is named after Tell Brak - the ancient city of Nagar in northern Mesopotamia, where archaeologists uncovered thousands of eye idol figurines deposited in a temple dedicated to an unnamed deity of sight, dating to the Late Chalcolithic period, circa 3500–3300 BCE. No other site in the ancient world produced anything quite like them: small stone figures, bodies covered in dots, heads dominated entirely by eyes - eyes carved as deep concentric circles, as if sight itself were the only thing that mattered. The figure at the center of this pendant is one of them. Carved from mottled beige and grey stone, it has a trapezoidal lower body covered in small circular depressions, a narrow neck, a rounded bifurcated head, and eyes rendered as deep concentric rings with traces of the original dark pigment still preserved in the grooves. It is 3 cm tall. It is approximately 5,500 years old. It has been looking at something the entire time. Sourced from a private European collection, acquired on the art market in the early 2000s. Set in 925 sterling silver plated with 18K gold, with a natural rough ruby - uncut, vivid, the color of the life force that these figures were made to witness and protect.
